Guin Batten Conquers Zero Degree Channel

Crewroom, JL's UK distributor, was one of the sponsors of yet another impressive ocean rowing adventure.  Yesterday Olympic silver medalist, Guin Batten became the first person to row solo across the Zero Degree Channel.  The channel cuts the equator between the Hvadhoo Atoll and the Fuahmulah Island in the south of the Maldives.

Guin accomplished the feat in 7 hours and 16 minutes.  She faced strong tides, ocean swells, and intense heat in a FISA coastal single (just 35 kg!).  Guin also holds the record for crossing the English Channel.  She set her time of 3 hours and 14 minutes (8 minutes faster than the men's record) in an Olympic class single.
Her latest venture is part of a larger effort to revive the sport of rowing in the Maldives.  Rowing has been a Maldivian tradition for thousands of years, but the introduction of motor boats has lead to its decline.  Guin will also participate in the establishment of a women's rowing club and a national championship regatta in the area.  She has teamed up with Friends of Maldives, an International Volunteer Program that seeks to improve the general wellbeing of Maldivians.  She asks that people show their support by joining her facebook group.
The President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed told reporters, "I am delighted that Guin has become the first person to row solo across the Zero Degree Channel.  I hope her efforts will be a catlyst for the revival of rowing in the Maldives."
