Head of the American, Folsom, CA
October 24, 2009

Regatta Site: Lake Natoma, Folsom, CA (directions)
Closest Airport: Sacramento International Airport (SMF)
Event Type: Head Race

Our...
Favorite eats near the racecourse:
Broadstone Plaza & Broadstone Market
These two malls are a few exits to the east on the freeway have good shopping and a lot of food choices.

The Old Spaghetti Factory
This restaurant is directly over the freeway and is great for team meals if you have a lot of hungry athletes. Beware that the crowds get huge here, so call ahead or go a few exits either way on the freeway for less-crowded options.

Onsite food
The race course typically only has limited food vendors, but there is Starbucks across the street as well as McDonald's, Taco Bell and Quizno's.

Bring your own BBQ
The course has a great grassy area near the launch beach. Many teams bring their own BBQ equipment to feed their athletes between races.

Hotel Notes:
On Booking:
Hotels right near the racecourse are booked a year in advance. Better luck getting hotels either off of Sunrise Blvd, Zinfandel Avenue, or East Bidwell street (all exits off the 50 freeway)

Hilton Garden Inn Folsom, 221 Iron Point Rd
The Hilton is across the street from the outlet malls, and only one exit to the east of the racecourse.

Lake Natoma Inn, 702 Gold Lake Drive
A great place to stay on the upper section of Lake Natoma, with nice views, walking trails around the lake, and Jacuzzi rooms.

To do:

Bike Trail on Racecourse
If you are so inclined, you CAN ride your bike along most of the race course. The trail goes all the way to Old Town Sacramento, 22 miles away. If you make it there, Old Town is a great area to hang out, with plenty of restaurants and sites.

Folsom Outlet Mall
The outlets are just one exit from Hazel Avenue and have over 200 stores to shop your heart out!

Century Theater
Across the street from the outlet mall is the closest movie theater. Go relax in a dark, cool place after baking in the sun.

Old Town Folsom
Check out some of the restored historical buildings while browsing one of many antique shops. There is great dining here, too.

Hot Tips:

  • Hotels near the racecourse are booked a year in advance. Better luck getting hotels either off of Sunrise Blvd, Zinfandel Avenue, or East Bidwell street (all exits off the 50 freeway)
  • Check the weather forecast - so wear a sweatshirt for cool mornings and then bring hats and sunscreen for hot afternoons.
  • Dogs are allowed on a leash.
  • Lake Natoma is in a State Park, so there are parking fees and most of the time a per-person entry fee as well.
  • Parking is VERY limited, so either get there early or take a free shuttle from the off site parking lot.
  • There is a gas station directly across the street for any last-minute purchases.
Racing is great!
