Our...
Mission Cafe & Coffee House, 3795 Mission Blvd
This local staple is a block from the beach and serves up unique and healthy breakfast food. Try the blackberry pancakes or one of their many vegetarian breakfasts, then go for a stroll on Mission Beach's boardwalk.
Broken Yolk Cafe, 1851 Garnet Ave
Talk about an amazing greasy spoon! The Broken Yolk is the biggest breakfast house in San Diego, and serves up huge platters to boot. The menu has a dizzying amount of dishes to choose from, but wait times can be long. Local Pacific Beach residents flock here on weekends.
If you visit San Diego and don't eat at one of the thousands of taco stands within a few miles of the racecourse, then you're doing your stomach a great disservice. The food is good just about anywhere, and prices are ridiculously cheap. Here are some of our favorites close by:
Ramiro's Raco Shop, 4525 Mission Blvd
One of our sales reps, Mara, comes here every year with her Master's team to grab carne asada burritos, tacos, and tostadas while lounging on one of the outside tables. It's open 24 hours, so come there for breakfast burritos or rolled tacos in the evenings.
El Indio, 3695 India Street
The one, the only, the world famous! El Indio has been a San Diego staple since 1940, serving up tasty Mexican food on the cheap. Their carnitas (slow-roasted pork) tacos are reason enough to drive from the race course. Grab some Bunuelo chips (tortilla chips with sugar and cinnamon) on your way out for an after-the-race snack.
Rubio's Baja Grill, 910 Grand Ave OR 4504 E. Mission Bay Drive
Ok, so Rubio's is a chain with over 150 locations, but they got their start with a walk-up stand in Mission Beach. Over 20 years later, their fish tacos are still to die for. If you've never had a fish taco, this is a great place to begin.
Mission Beach Boardwalk and Belmont Park
The boardwalk next to Mission Beach is a great way to people watch, stroll leisurely, or rent a beach cruiser bike for a relaxing ride. While you're riding or walking, be sure to check out Belmont Park, a seaside amusement park from the 1940s. Get a ride on the Giant Dipper, one of two ocean roller coasters still operating on the West Coast.
San Diego Zoo
There is no experience quite like the San Diego Zoo; it's home to polar bears swimming in 80 degree weather, and the biggest population of giant pandas outside mainland China. The zoo can be overwhelmingly extensive (who knew there were that many species of gazelle?), so look for the Skyfari gondola for a scenic ride if your legs are still tired from racing.
